'Forty Two

Sci-fi / Drama | 1h 10m | 2023

Role: Cinematographer

The Brief: Sci-fi Alternate history Word War 2 Film, with Horror elements

This was great fun to plan and work on, its not everyday you get a scrip as unique and well written as this

'Forty Two was a challenging shoot, low budget and low time. Working hard with a great team from the top down we finished on time and in budget with a film we can all be proud of.

Shot on the Blackmagic Pocket 6k Pro, this film is close to my heart as it was my debut feature film. I was lucky enough to work with Eric I. Steele on the short Unmasked previously. We bonded quickly over our film tastes and he really introduced me to some forgotten classics.

'Fory-Two is an alternate history World War 2 film with sci-fi, horror and drama elements. It really was a wild ride to shoot.

Talking to Eric for a few months before the project about influences and the look and feel of scenes was a blast.

You can probably see some Schindler's List influences in there from the stills. This was great challenge to me to try and emulate the film stock it was shot on. When you see me, feel free to ask about it, I'll never shut up.

World Of Wonder

Commercial  | 1m | 2022

Role: Director Of Photography

The Brief: To highlight the rebrand of Amscan. Use the products they make (costumes and party supplies)  to show how important these moments can be.

This was a fun one, the brief was very maximalist and its something the team ran with. We have some lovely visuals and some nice emotional moments.

Great work Team!

This shoot working with Eight Engines was an absolute pleasure, it always is when I get to work with that team.

This was shot on the Sony FX9 with the Sirui anamorphic set of primes.

With the set an action being so busy the aim of the game was to be a bit more subtle but lean into what's going on, we needed it to be dynamic but I also wanted to let the products speak for themselves. It's very easy to over do it with motion on a shoot like this but I'd like to think the results speak for themselves.

Worked on a custom warming LUT for this shoot wanted it to look high end and warm.

In a Bedroom

Drama | 14m | 2023

Role: Director of Photography

The Brief: A single room single day shoot - Oh the obstacles we overcome. We needed to pack a lot of subtext and emotion into this tight film.

A short film from an exciting up-and-coming director. Challenging location, great performances.

Another great shoot to work on, Michael Hua had a really sweet, touching but tough script. I was happy to get involved and push myself as I knew it was going to be a little tough practically.

Set in one room with a builder crawling though a window, all while shot in central Manchester. It's going to have a little bit of worry for everyone - my real problem was that it was a white walled room, the bane of anyone with a camera really.

So I had to think a little more out of the box on how we approached this, working with the team to find ways to break up the walls with decorations, a pop or even a splash of light went a long way.

This was shot on Blackmagic 6K Pro with a custom LUT. Because the film deals with some dark subject matter, I wanted the saturations to be just right, not completely bleak.

Team Academy

Drama | 11m | 2035

Role: Director Of Photography

The Brief: This was to highlight the work done by Team Academy and the growth the clients go though.

This was an adventure and I think that feeling comes across in this! Early starts were worth it when you see some of the skylines we had for this! A very action packed shoot for an action packed company.

This was an early start.

Again working with Eight Engines, this was one of those shoots that we really depended on the weather gods. They obviously chose to bless this shoot with the sunrise we got that crisp morning.

Shot on the Sony FX9 (used a slightly different Rec.709 grade) this was a great shoot featuring a LOT of locations and a LOT of people, some running though mud and water - thankfully I was spared all that and just had to hold the camera and make sure I captured all that beautiful nature with the action we had going.

Though I was roped up shooting down an old quarry that was pretty cool. The shot was worth it.

Good thing I'm not afraid of heights.

Unmaksed

Drama | 14m | 2022

Role: Cinematographer

The Brief:  A short horror with psychological elements - This was great fun to use wider lens'  to great effect.

The first time I worked with Eric I. Steele who is a wonderful writer and director it's always a pleasure to work with him, and even more fun to read the scripts first time. Unmasked was a labour of love, but again I think we have something to be proud of here.

This was my first short in a while but I don't think I could have asked for a better team on this.

Shot on the Sony As7iii with speed boosted EF lens it wasn't exactly what I've been used to shooting on but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Using the speed booster gave us that extra FOV to play with. It also allowed us to have things feel a little 'off'

This was the first film I did with Eric I. Steele and it was a little unorthodox but you can't argue with the results.

Strong script and some fantastic performances all round.
